This pretty studio bridal session by Brooke Bakken stoke our hearts. Kennedy (the bride) shared with us what was behind her wearing her mom’s wedding gown as part of this session and also her own bridal gown shopping story, both carry some sentimental weight!
Ever since I was a teenage girl, I had way too much fun dressing up in my mom’s crazy 80’s wedding dress. Every time I put it on there was a lot of laughter and mocking the big bow in the back and the puffy sleeves, even from my mom herself! But our fun and laughter was often stopped by my sentimental and softy dad because “my wife looked beautiful in that dress” the day they got married! My best friend who got married before me also wore her mom’s dress for a few pictures in her bridal shoot and when I saw her do it I knew I had to do it too! I also ended up getting married on my mom’s birthday so we felt like it would be the perfect tribute and we even added a “Who wore it best?” display at our reception with side by side pictures!
I always thought choosing a dress would be the hardest decision ever. Back in the high school prom days I would even buy two dresses I couldn’t decide between and felt bad returning one because I thought dresses had feelings! haha The first time I went dress shopping was with my mom and sisters. I wasn’t officially engaged yet, or even sure I was going to marry my now husband at that point, but my sister was about to head off to Brazil for an 18 month mission. In her opinion, I was for sure getting married when she was gone and being a “Say Yes to the Dress” addict, she wanted to go dress shopping with me before she left. The favorite dress of the day was the dress my sister picked out. I didn’t think much of it until I started going dress shopping for real and I couldn’t stop thinking about that dress! I kept asking every dress store if they had something with a fun scoop neckline with detail, fitted, with lace, and buttons down the back, and kept showing everyone that dress for reference. It finally took one employee to tell me “I think you have already found your dress” for it to sink in I had. It was the easiest decision and I felt so happy that when I did get married while my sister was in Brazil, that I could tell everyone that she picked out my dress.
